Now Tapped: Kick Back Kölsch

It’s officially summer! A crisp, refreshing beer will be a necessity for your pool parties, BBQ’s and other festivities. If you’re looking for a new beer to become your summertime staple, we have a new style to love at first sip: Kick Back Kölsch. We released the first taste of our newest, full-time Thr3e Wise Men beer to a handful of lucky guests at our Broad Ripple brewery this past Thursday. We think you’ll be impressed with our version of the historic Kölsch style beer.

Kölsch is a hybrid beer style that originated in Cologne, Germany (Köln in German dialect). Kölsch is considered a hybrid because it is warm fermented with ale yeast, then cold conditioned like a lager. The marriage of the two styles makes the beer slightly dry, with fruity/bready notes and aromas. The unique Kölsch style has been brewed exclusively in Cologne since the early 1900s, but gained popularity in the region in the 1960s. In 1986, the Kölsch Konvention (Cologne Brewer’s Association) designated what is considered a Kölsch beer to protect its authenticity and unique style. They determined that a true Kölsch must be brewed in the Cologne region, made according to the Reinheitsgebot Purity Laws (with only barley, hops, water & yeast) and served in a special tall glass called a Stange. As you can tell, the Germans take their beer VERY seriously, but so do we. Since our brewery is way outside of the Cologne region, we technically must designate our beer as a “Kölsch Style”, but the flavor profile and brewing method are closely related to the same historic brewing process of a true Kölsch.

Our Kick Back Kölsch is a crisp, sessionable beer with a distinct German pilsner malt character that blends well with the fruity flavors of its Hallertau Blanc Hops. It’s 5.2% ABV (Alcohol by Volume), a little higher than the traditional 4-5% range of most American Kölsches. It’s perfect to sip (or chug) while you’re outside in the hot weather this summer. Right now, we’re pouring it exclusively at our Broad Ripple brewery, but look for it at our Muncie Thr3e Wise Men location and our Indiana Scotty’s Brewhouse locations within the next few weeks. Stop by our brewery and have a pint for $3 or fill up your growler for $8 (Monday-Thursday only). Cheers!

We gave away free glass growlers to our first 50 guests at our Tapping Party and had plenty of filled ones ready in the fridge!
